Faculty Member from the Graduate Program in Environmental Technology Wins USP Outstanding Thesis Award

Professor and researcher from the Graduate Program in Environmental Technology and the Medicine course at Unaerp, Guilherme Sgobbi Zagui, emerged victorious in the 12th edition of the USP Outstanding Thesis Award (University of São Paulo) in the field of Health Sciences.
Under the guidance of professors Susana Segura Muñoz and Leonardo Neves de Andrade, the developed thesis was titled “Antibiotics and Bacteria in Sewage and Receiving Surface Waters: Risks of the Spread of ESBL-Encoding Genes, Carbapenemases, and Metal Tolerance in the context of One Health.” Professor Zagui emphasizes that the theme of antibiotic resistance in bacteria from aquatic matrices, which he has been studying since 2016 when he started his master’s degree, is a widely discussed topic in the scientific community given its implications for public health.

In his thesis, the professor addressed the theme of antibiotic resistance in bacteria from aquatic environments.
The purpose of the award is to encourage research activities among enrolled students and accredited professors in the Graduate Programs at the University of São Paulo. According to the professor, receiving the USP Outstanding Thesis Award 2023 represents “recognition of the studied issue, which is certainly an imminent risk in terms of public health.”
Furthermore, the professor adds that “receiving the award has a positive impact on my professional career, considering that the thesis was selected among all others in the broad field of Health Sciences.” Zagui concludes by expressing gratitude to Unaerp and professors Reinaldo Bulgarelli Bestetti, coordinator of the Medicine Program at UNAERP, as well as professors Murilo Daniel de Mello Innocentini, coordinator of the Unaerp Graduate Program in Environmental Technology, and Helen Figueiredo Fumagalli, lecturer in the Medicine Program.
