Unaerp welcomes professor from Portugal to lecture on Consumer Law in Europe

The Undergraduate and the Graduate Programs in Law at Unaerp welcomed Professor Mário Frota, Director of the Consumer Law Studies Center at the Faculty of Law of the University of Coimbra, for a lecture on Consumer Law in Europe on November 16 at the Bassano Vaccarini Theater.
During the event, Frota discussed new rules and precautions for the financing of collective actions in Europe. “It is a phenomenon that seems to be still unknown in Brazil, but it will not be long before it knocks on your door. The financing of collective actions, whenever the plaintiffs are civil society institutions other than the Public Prosecutor’s Office, is one of the vulture funds that in Europe soar according to interests and circumstances. They are taking a portion of the compensations awarded by the courts. This issue is of utmost importance, and we need to be on guard so as not to be surprised by the illicit exploitation of things that aim to restore victims to the necessary repair but are then subtracted for these funds that are filling their pockets at the expense of the poor,” said the professor.

Professor Mario Frota is a reference in Consumer Law

Gregório Assagra de Almeida, a faculty member of the Graduate Program in Law at Unaerp, stated that the presence of the University of Coimbra professor enriches the consumer rights debate. “Professor Mário Frota is one of the great interpreters and leaders of consumer movements worldwide. The importance of his presence here is precisely to discuss collective actions and see what is happening in Portugal and the European Union so that we can also develop lines of scientific research in defense of the consumer, which is an important defense of citizenship.”
Almeida also mentioned that, in addition to the lecture, a cooperation agreement was signed with the Portuguese Consumer Institute and UNAERP. “We will develop these lines of research with courses, lectures, and publications. This is very important for the fundamental rights of citizens, for the University, the Law undergraduate program, and for the graduate program in Collective Rights and Citizenship at Unaerp.”
